Hip-Hop lost a legend today.

Rob Base was part of a very specific era of sound-when rap records were built not just to be heard, but to dance to and command rooms. His work became part of the foundation of Hip-Hop’s party playlist.

At a time when Hip-Hop was still proving itself as a commercial force, Rob Base helped solidify something undeniable: this culture could fill dance floors across generations, cities, and races.

Records like “It Takes Two” didn’t simply cross over, they erased the idea of crossover altogether. The song became a shared language in clubs, block parties, gyms, radios, and weddings. Decades later, it still behaves like a living thing in any room it enters.

His music became a blueprint that producers still study, sample, and recreate. In many ways, he helped define how Hip-Hop could exist in its most basic form.

Today, the entire culture is reflecting on his passing. His music continues to live wherever Hip-Hop is played.

We will continue to honor voices like Rob Base as the foundation and architecture of hip hop.
